«What is the share of women in the cultural field, what are their conditions of access to employment, to the means of creation and production and to artistic consecration?
As every year since 2013 on the occasion
of International Women’s Day, The publication of the
Observatory on Gender Equality in Culture and Communication makes it possible
to measure progress towards equality in the cultural and media fields. Born of
a desire to objectify the position of women in the cultural professions, access
to the means of creation and production and artistic consecration, the
Equality Observatory has become the annual barometer needed to
measure progress since the adoption of the Law on Substantive Equality between
Women and Men in 2014.
Based on
administrative data collected in central government, from institutions under
the supervision of the Ministry of Culture and from collective copyright
management bodies, the field covered by the Observatory is
enriched each year by complementary indicators that contribute to a fairer and
more precise vision on the part of women in the cultural sectors. Heritage,
artistic creation, cinema and audiovisual, cultural industries, media… are now
covered and have precise indicators on the conditions of employment and
remuneration of women, their access to creative grants, their artistic income
and their place in artistic consecration.
While it
measures undeniable progress in the representation of women in the cultural,
artistic and media fields and progress to which it has undoubtedly contributed
through the objectification of intuitions, the Observatory also
highlights, this year as the previous ones, the persistence of inequalities,
inertia and brakes. That is why this ninth edition is more than necessary to
continue the fight for equal rights, at the foundation of a more just society». Daqui
